Bismillah-hir Rahman-nir Raheem (in the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

Moazzem Begg, who was detained (ie kept without trial or charge at Guantanamo Bay before being released after three years) in 2002, is now being harassed yet again by the government, this time being charged with terror offences related to Syria.

The UK government has declared that it will view any travel to Syria as suspicious – so even if you are travelling for humanitarian purposes, the UK government has decided to treat people as guilty first – hardly the act of a ‘civilised’ country that prides itself on international aid. What happened to being innocent until proven guilty?

Moazzem Begg has been campaigning for human rights ever since he returned from Guantanamo and has spoken out against the government’s deliberate approach of turning a blind eye to injustice across the world. He’s currently an Outreach Director at Cage, which works to help communities who have been affected by the War on Terror (also known as the War Against Islam and Muslims). Cage are appalled at the accusations against Moazzem (read their response).

Asim Qureshi, Research Director of CAGE said: “We reiterate our concern that this is a politically motivated arrest and very much bears the hallmarks of trying to criminalise legitimate Muslim activity by reinforcing a climate of fear.”

Moazzem says::  “I am certain that the only reason I am being continually harassed – something that began long before any visit to Syria – is because CagePrisoners and I are at the forefront of investigations and assertions based on hard evidence that British governments, past and present, have been wilfully complicit in torture”.

Whilst held at guantanamo, Moazzem was subject to torture and abuse by the US government – he has since written a book about his experience, Enemy Combatant.

Our brother Moazzem will appear at the Old Bailey on 14th March – a court known to be unfair and harsh in its sentencing of Muslims. In the meantime, do please help to highlight this latest injustice by the government, in their paranoia and phobia of Islam and Muslims.
