During Ramadan and fasting, it’s Sunnah to break your fast with dates. However, there is a campaign to boycott certain dates because the manufacturers are either directly or indirectly responsible and supporting the illegal occupation of Palestine the oppression of the Palestinians. By buying their dates, you will be helping to continue the occupation of Muslim lands in Palestine.

I have copied the below article from the Friends of Al-Aqsa website:

This Ramadan, Don’t Break your Fast with an Israeli Date

Ramadan is a time of year when we remember those who are less fortunate than ourselves.  It  would be an affront if at such a time we helped support oppression

Every year, Israel exports millions of pounds worth of dates to the world, which many people unknowingly buy and use to break their fasts. These dates are grown in illegal settlements in the West Bank and the Jordan Valley, on land that has been stolen from Palestinians. By buying these dates, we are in fact helping Israel to continue its occupation and oppression of the Palestinian people.

For this reason, Friends of Al Aqsa will again be launching the ‘Check the Label’ Campaign.

The Palestinian Call for Boycott Divestment and Sanctions

Inspired by the struggle of South Africans against apartheid and in the spirit of international solidarity, moral consistency and resistance to injustice and oppression,

We, representatives of Palestinian civil society, call upon international civil society organizations and people of conscience all over the world to impose broad boycotts and implement divestment initiatives against Israel similar to those applied to South Africa in the apartheid era. We appeal to you to pressure your respective states to impose embargoes and sanctions against Israel. We also invite conscientious Israelis to support this Call, for the sake of justice and genuine peace.

These non-violent punitive measures should be maintained until Israel meets its obligation to recognize the Palestinian peoples inalienable right to self-determination and fully complies with the precepts of international law by:

  1. Ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and dismantling the Wall;
  2. Recognizing the fundamental rights of the Arab-Palestinian citizens of Israel to full equality; and
  3. Respecting, protecting and promoting the rights of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and properties as stipulated in UN resolution 194.

Palestinian Workers

Israelis will claim that Palestinians are allowed to work on the land of these settlers and therefore they are provided with jobs and a boycott will harm them. In actual fact, these Palestinians are employed for paltry wages, and they are required to do the back-breaking work that the Israeli settlers will not do themselves. This means the Israeli settlers reap the rewards for the harvests while doing very little of the work themselves.

Palestinian children are employed by these settlers, and they are forced to work long hours under a hot baking sun for small sums of money. This exploitation means that these children miss out on an education.

Alternatives to Israeli Dates

There are plenty of varieties of dates from various other countries to break your fast. However if you would like  Medjoul dates from Palestine and  help the Palestinian farmers they are available from  YAFFA. YAFFA source there dates from Palestine and FOA are helping YAFFA distribute dates this Ramadhan.

There are two stages to this campaign:

Stage 1 – Contact and inform the wholesalers and shops.

Stage 2 – Contact and inform consumers.

Stage One

FOA have sent letters to over 1000 wholesalers and shops but we need your help to add the personal touch as that is the best method to encourage people to join the campaign.

There are 6 steps to this stage. We would like you to:

Preparation:

  1. If you can try and involve family and friends in the campaign.
  2. Print letters for Wholesalers and Shop Owners: Click here for the letter.
  3. Order Check the Label posters and postcards from dates@checkthelabel.org.uk so you can put poster up on shop windows and leave postcards on the counter (with permission)

Method:

  1. Identify the wholesalers, importers and shops in your area hand deliver the wholesaler/shop letters supplied by FOA.  Inform them about Israeli human rights abuses (you can give them of FOA leaflets).
  2. Tell wholesalers and shop owners about the concept of boycotting and how it has worked e.g. South Africa. Ask them to boycott dates from Israel, West Bank and the Jordan Valley. Explain West Bank and Jordan Valley are illegally occupied and buying dates from there would mean they are supporting the occupation of Palestine.
  3. Let them know that they can buy dates from many other countries, but if they want to buy medjoul dates from Palestine they can contact medjoul@checkthelabel.org.uk, (+44) (0)116 2125 441 or Zaytoun on (+44) (0)207 609 5699

Stage Two

Most of the people we have approached during the Check the Label campaign did not know dates are from Israel and also did not know that dates labelled West Bank or the Jordan Valley should also be Boycotted.   Once they were told, the overwhelming majority of people were happy to join the boycott.

Boycott is about people power.  We need your help to inform people they should ‘Check the Label’ and boycott dates from Israel, West Bank and Jordan Valley.

Preparation:

  1. If you can try and involve family and friends in the campaign.
  2. Print letters for mosques and organisations : Click here for the letter
  3. Order Check the Label posters and postcards from here so you can put poster up on shop windows and leave postcards on the counter (with permission).

Method:

  1. Identify Mosques and Community Centres in your area and hand deliver the Mosque/organisation letter supplied by FOA.  Inform them about Israeli human rights abuses (you can give them of FOA leaflets).
  2. Tell the mosque/ community centre contact about the concept of boycotting and how it has worked e.g. South Africa. Ask them to boycott dates from Israel, West Bank and the Jordan Valley. Explain West Bank and Jordan Valley are illegally occupied and buying dates from there would mean they are supporting the occupation of Palestine.
  3. Ask them if you can leave leaflets at the entrance and put up a poster
  4. Organise a time with friends and family to distribute outside the mosque after prayers, especially after Friday prayers.
  5. Let FOA know when you are planning to distribute outside mosques so we can try and co-ordinate with other volunteers.
  6. Contact your local newspaper and your local radio Ramadhan to let them know what is happening. Take photos when it is appropriate  and send updates to info@checkthelabel.org.uk

Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. It is during this month that the Shayateen are locked away in chains, that the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed and Laylat-ul-Qadr is to be found:

‘The month of Ramadan, in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the  criterion (between what is right and wrong)’ Surat Al-Baqarah v185

‘Verily! We have sent it (the Qur’an) down in Laylat-ul-Qadr (the Night of Decree). And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than one thousand months..’ Surat Al-Qadr, v1-3

‘When the month of Ramadan arrives, the doors of Heaven are opened, the doors of Hell are closed and the devils put under chains.’ [Bukhari and Muslim]

Benefits of Fasting and Ramadan

Allah Commanded us to fast. It’s the one deed that is purely for Allah alone. And the benefits of fasting are many:

The Prophet (pbuh) said that Allah said: ‘The Fast is for Me and I will give the reward for it, as he (the one who observes the fast) leaves his sexual desire, food and drink for My Sake. Fasting is a screen (from hell), and there are two moments of pleasure (moments of happiness or joys) for a fasting person, one at the time of breaking his fast and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord. And the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is better in Allah’s Sight than the smell of musk.’ [Bukhari]

Allah declared: ‘O you have believed! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was ordained for those before you, so that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious).’ Surat Al-Baqarah v183

‘Whoever observes (fasts) during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah’s Rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven.’ [Bukhari & Muslim]

Abu Ayyoob al-Ansaari narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Whoever fasts Ramadaan then follows it with six days of Shawwaal, it will be like fasting for a lifetime.” [Sahih Muslim]

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Whoever fasts Ramadaan, a month is like ten months, and fasting six days after al-Fitr will complete the year.” [Ahmad]

‘Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) said: My nation is given 5 privileges in the month of Ramadan that no nation was given before:

  • The khaloof (odour of the mouth of a fasting person) is sweeter in the sight of Allah than the fragrance of musk
  • The angels keep praying to Allah to forgive the fasting people until they break their fast
  • Allah decorates Paradise every day saying to it ‘My righteous slaves are about to be comforted of their burdens and sufferings and enter you’
  • The Shayateen are chained during this month
  • Sins of the believers are forgiven  by the last night of Ramadan. [Muslim]

Bismillah-hir Rahman-nir Raheem (in the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

The Ummah is under attack. In fact, the Ummah has been under attack for decades upon decades.

The oppressors come under the guise of peacemakers, as Allah Warned us:

“And when it is said to them: “Make not mischief on the earth,” they say: “We are only peacemakers.””- Qur’an, Surat Al-Baqarah, v11

Israeli USA Flag

Gaza and Palestine has been under attack for over 64 years, since it’s creation by the World Zionist Organisation and the United Nations (the organisation that claims to protect but has failed to do so with Palestine). The UK was instrumental in this, so it’s naive to think there will be help from these quarters. The USA is influenced heavily by the Israelis and no international policy on Israel is passed without their approval. Egypt and Jordan signed peace treaties with Israel and in doing so, stands by idly whilst children are killed, families are torn apart and the Muslims are being slaughtered. The Saudi family was put in place by the British and have served their role ever since. These regimes are only there to halt any uprising amongst the Muslims and to keep the balance of power in Israel’s favour.

The Israelis have used the holocaust to protect themselves from any attack – they play the sympathy card but after 70 years, it’s wearing thin. Especially when they’ve instigated their own holocaust on the Muslims.

The Muslims have been set upon to fight each other and this must now stop, because the UMMAH is under fire: Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central African Republic, Nigeria and so on… these are all lands of the Ummah. This is one body, not several split into countries that have become self-serving and nationalistic.

It’s time to wake up and stop fighting each other. It’s time to wake up and realise that the divisions between the Muslims have been put there by unscrupulous people to keep us arguing against each other and keep our energies wasted on each other. It’s time to wake up and realise that the differences you have with your brothers and sisters are part of a game from those who would benefit from keeping Muslims apart. We have always had one true aqeedah and that is within the Qur’an and the authentic hadith – learn this so you ensure the Guidance and Help from Allah reaches you.

You need to make sure any conflict is not about that country. We are ONE UMMAH. We always have been, even though some generations forgot this. There is no nationalistic divide between us. Do not call for the freedom of Gaza. Do not call for the fredom of Palestine. Do not call for the end to atrocities of the Syrians. If you call upon this, you will only get temporary respite. We are all MUSLIMS. So call upon the defence of the Ummah, call upon the defence of Islam. And in this way you invite the Help and Victory of Allah.

Remember always, we are one Ummah. What happens in one part affects the other. We cannot ignore the sufferings of the peoples of the world. We must help. And it starts by helping ourselves to strengthen the Ummah and make it ONE.

What will you do to unite with your brothers and sisters?

HSBC Bank issues notice to Ummah Welfare Trust to shut it’s account down

This is the wider war – Boycott HSBC bank.

As the war rages in Gaza and innocent Muslims are killed, HSBC Bank has issued Ummah Welfare Trust a notice of only two months to close down its accounts.

This is very similar to what Barclays did to Ummah Welfare Trust during the previous Gaza war in 2008.

In response Ummah Welfare Trust will be increasing its support towards the Orphans, Widows and the injured in Gaza through its other Bank accounts.

The charity appeals to the Ummah and those who support and sympathise with the Humanitarian cause of the Palestinians to support us by doing the following:

  1. Boycott and close down your personal and business accounts with HSBC.
  2. Inform your contacts worldwide in the Muslim world and further afar to boycott HSBC Global.
  3. Continue donating to the charity on http://www.uwt.org to increase our aid efforts.
  4. Protest by sending an email to managingdirectoruk@hsbc.com

KavLaOved, the NGO committed to protecting the rights of disadvantaged workers in Israeli companies, has reported that SodaStream factory workers, in particular Palestinians, are paid less than half the minimum wage and has described the working conditions in the factory as “one of the worst”, with workers being fired if they complain of the conditions.

SodaStream brands include: SodaStream, Soda-Club, AlcoJet, Sprudelino, Aquabar, Gazoz, Aquafizz, Aquabubbler, Penguin, Sodamaker, Fountain Jet and Edition1. Its products are available in Argos, Asda, Comets, Currys, Harvey Nichols, Homebase, John Lewis, Robert Dyas, Selfridges and House of Fraser.

STARBUCKS

Howard Schultz, the founder, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Starbucks who also owns 31.6 million shares of Starbucks stock (worth around $1.4 billion in Nov 2011) is an active zionist.

MCDONALDS

McDonald’s Corporation is a major corporate partner of the Jewish United Fund and Jewish Federation. According to the Jewish United Fund, through its Israel Commission it “works to maintain American military, economic and diplomatic support for Israel; monitors and, when necessary, responds to media coverage of Israel”. The Jewish United Fund also runs “Fun-filled Summer Family Missions to Israel” where families get to “visit an army base and meet with Israeli soldiers” and “visit our sister city, Kiryat Gat and see the important work we are doing there”. Kiryat Gat is built on stolen Palestinian land – the lands of the villages of Iraq Al Manshiya and Al-Faluja whose residents were ethnically cleansed in 1949 in contravention of International Law. Through its “Partnership to Israel” programme, the Jewish United Fund provides $1.3 million annually to help further settlement and development of Kiryat Gat. The Jewish Federation, through its Israel Action Network is tasked to fight “efforts to boycott Israeli products” and “campaigns, such as equating Israel with apartheid South Africa”.

Another way McDonald’s supports the Jewish United Fund is by running a partnership scheme whereby they will match any donation an employee make to the Jewish United Fund with its own equal size donation.

McDonald’s first restaurant in the Middle East was in Israel, opened in 1993, since then it has 160 restaurants in Israel (1996) with a 60% market share, employing around 4000 Israelis. Since April 2009 McDonald’s has also opened 15 branches of McCafe chain in Israel, with plans to open 10 new branches every year.

McDonalds discriminates against its Arab workers, in 2004 it sacked an Arab worker in Israel because she was caught speaking arabic to another Arab employee. Arabic, along with Hebrew, is the official language of Israel spoken by 20% of the population.

According to the American Jewish Committee (AJC), whose Executive Director “regularly meets with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu”, McDonald’s in July 2001 immediately pulled an advertising campaign in Egypt when the ADC contacted them to complaint that the singer featured in the advert had in the past performed a song critical of Israel. Within 24 hours of the complaint, the advert was cancelled and according to the Egyptian franchise of McDonald’s “all copies of the tapes were whisked ‘back to the main offices'”!

TESCO

Tesco stores stock a large amount of produce grown in the Occupied Territories and purchased from the Israeli state, including fruit and vegetables from producer Carmel-Agrexco. Israeli products stocked by Tesco include fruit juice, mangoes, avocados, grapes, stonefruit, dates, herbs, pickled cucumbers, Exquisa potatoes, mixed peppers (from Israel and a second country of origin), Barkan wine, Yarden wine, biscuits, cold meat, dips, Osem soups and cakes, snacks by Beigel & Beigel, Telma (soup mixes and cubes, noodles etc) and socks (Tesco’s own brand).

Tesco sells products from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank, many of which are exported by Carmel Agrexco. The company admitted sourcing ‘a number of products’ from illegal settlements, including avocados, herbs, grapes and stonefruit, such as peaches, from farms in the West Bank and Golan Heights. In 2006 War on Want reported that Tesco sells Beigel and Beigel products sourced from the settlements. Tesco also sells gas cylinders for products made by settlement company Soda Club, and repackages settlement dates from Hadiklaim as Tesco own brand dates. Mehadrin-Tnuport Export Company (MTex) supplies Tesco with settlement citrus fruit and there are links between Tesco and the Arava settlement company.

In October 2007, a group of campaigners from the Brighton Tubas Friendship and Solidarity Group entered Tomer settlement in the occupied Jordan Valley and photographed medjoul dates, packaged by Carmel Agrexco, labelled ‘Made in Israel’ and marked as bound for Tesco stores.

Products exported as ‘Made in Israel’ benefit from the preferential trade terms of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which came into effect in 2000. Settlement products, however, are excluded from the beneficial terms of the EU-IAA.

When ITN screened an expose in 2007 accusing supermarkets of misleading British consumers, Tesco admitted it had acted “in error” and stated that Israeli dates “originating solely in the West Bank will [in the future] be labelled as such.”

BIGCampaign and others groups have been campaigning against the ‘West Bank’ label as it misleads consumers into believing produce from illegal settlements is actually Palestinian. The Palestinian General Delegation to the UK has written a letter of protest to Tesco, and other retailers, for persisting in the use of this misleading label.

Tesco says that ‘freedom of choice’ is one of the company’s priorities and consumers can choose not to buy Israeli products. However, in correspondence with campaigners in 2006, Tesco representatives said they were phasing out Tesco’s line of Israeli peppers due to consumer pressure. Boycott Israeli Goods campaigners have also consistently attended the Tesco AGM to raise the issue of settlement produce and propose a boycott of Israeli goods.

John Porter, one of the principal shareholders in Tesco, also has substantial investments in Israeli companies. In 2000, Tesco awarded a $1 million IT contract to the Israeli firm Tescom to provide a solution for Tesco’s Year 2000 conversion requirements.

During the bombing of Gaza, Tesco was targeted across the country by campaigners calling for a boycott of Israeli goods. In Swansea, activists stole Israeli settlement produce from Tesco and sprayed it with red dye to highlight Tesco’s complicity in Israel’s war crimes by profiting from settlement produce and enabling the settlements to trade and profit from their illegal occupation of Palestinian land.

Bismillah-hir Rahman-nir Raheem (in the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

Despite the hundreds murdered by Israelis, thousands that have been injured and tens of thousands whose homes have been destroyed, Palestine is not under attack.

…The UMMAH IS UNDER ATTACK!

It’s time to stop making this an issue about Palestine – it isn’t. Islam is not a natioanlistic religion. Muslims are not nationalists – wherever there are Muslims in the world, they are our concern and there is no barrier between us and them. This is not an attack on Palestine, this is an attack on the Muslim Ummah, this is an attack on Islam. And the Israelis will never leave us in peace.

Israel hides behind excuses, pretending to be the victim. But the numbers and facts say otherwise:

  • over 350 Muslims in Gaza murdered, many children, described as ‘terrorist threats’ and acceptable human collateral (according to the BBC, who is pro-Israeli reporting)
  • more than 2,800 Muslims have been injured from the attacks
  • more than 50,000 Muslims in Gaza have been seeking shelter from the attacks (according to the UN, which idly stands by and allows Israel to continue the massacres)
  • Less than 10 Israelis dead in comparison (is an Israeli life worth more than the hundreds of Muslims killed and butchered by Israelis?)

All that Barack Obama can do is say that he’s “deeply concerned” – what a helpful statement! All talk and no action. Gaza has a population of around 1.8 million Muslims – when will the Israelis be satisfied? When all our Muslims brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers and children are dead? There is more to the bombings and killings than the powers-to-be will admit to. They stand without action, allowing innocents to be killed. They do this time and again. They have done this for the past 56 years.

Isn’t it time that Muslims stopped listening to the hypocrisy? The USA and UK and European allies have no interest in saving Muslim lives – they would have done this in the past 56 years but haven’t. There’s no point in protesting to powers who are not interested in listening to our pleas.

It’s time that Muslims took control of the situation and started to pressure the neighbouring Muslim countries to step in and stop the hostilities, to defend Muslims in Gaza, to defend the Ummah and Islam.

Bismillah-hir Rahman-nir Raheem (in the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

I have copied the below articles from the Friends of Al-Aqsa website:

Check The Label – Boycott Israeli Dates

We often check the ingredients on food packaging to decide if foods are good for our health and if they are halal. This campaign extends the concept to ‘check the label’ to ensure the dates we eat during Ramadhan are good for our body and soul!

Ramadan is a time of year when we remember those who are less fortunate than ourselves. It is a time we feed ourselves spiritually. Therefore it would be an affront if at such a time we helped support oppression buy buying these dates.

With your help over the past four years the ‘check the label’ campaign has grown significantly and we have had great successes due to your hard work, time and dedication. The campaign has gone to the heart of the communities in cities and towns across the UK to ensure no one buys these dates. However there is still a lot of work to be done.

On Friday 27 June, after the last Jummah prayers before Ramadhan we want to do it all again and reach out to more people to help ensure no one breaks their fast with an Israeli date. We need your help again to:

– distribute leaflets after Friday prayers

– put up posters on your mosque notice board

– post up selfies holding the leaflet using #icheckthelabel

–    Use #icheckthelabel

     #icheckthelabel to stand with Palestinians
#icheckthelabel because it’s the right thing to do
     #icheckthelabel because I have a voice
#icheckthelabel because I have a voice and I’m going to use it
     #icheckthelabel because I don’t buy stolen goods #awkward
     #icheckthelabel because I have a choice #yaffa #zaytoun

#icheckthelabel as I don’t want to fund Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine
#icheckthelabel because I don’t want Israel profiting from the occupation
#icheckthelabel so I’m doing my bit to end the occupation
#icheckthelabel because I am not a thief. I don’t want to buy stolen goods

Order your campaign material now and get ready. Email admin@foa.org.uk with your address and the number of leaflets, poster and stickers you need. Please let us know which mosque you will distribute outside/put up a poster.

Volunteer Ambassador

Volunteer to be an ambassador for the Check the Label Campaign in your area. This will mean you will help promote the campaign in your area. This will include distributing leaflets, speaking to shop owners, setting up stalls and much more. become an Ambassador and order your free literature to help spread the word.

Making Money from the Occupation

  • Dates were Israel’s leading fruit export, most of which come to Europe
  • The total income for Israel from dates in a year is approximately €80 million.

  1. Ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and dismantling the Wall;

Another provider is Zaytoun, www.zaytoun.org

Get Involved

There are two stages to this campaign:

Stage 1 – Contact and inform the wholesalers and shops.

Stage 2 – Contact and inform consumers.

Stage One

FOA have sent letters to over 1000 wholesalers and shops but we need your help to add the personal touch as that is the best method to encourage people to join the campaign.

There are 6 steps to this stage. We would like you to:

Preparation:

  1. If you can try and involve family and friends in the campaign.

  1. Ending its occupation and colonization of all Arab lands and dismantling the Wall;
