Insha’Allah I’m climbing Mount Snowdon, which is 2550 feet high, on Saturday 10th September. I’m donating the money raised through Human Relief Foundation, a UK registered charity which has been providing emergency relief and aid for over 20 years now!

Mount Snowdon rates amongst the most beautiful mountains in the world. It is the highest mountain in Wales and can be both a rewarding and satisfying achievement for those who reach the summit. Whichever direction you approach it from the size and grandeur impresses. Snowdon stands 3,560 feet high. Each year 350,000 people reach the summit, some on foot and some by train. The summit has 200 inches of rain per year, and can reach temperatures of 30 centigrade in high summer, and plummet to -20 centigrade in the winter. The summit buildings at the top can by covered by ice and snow between November and April.

The situation has become very severe in, South Eastern Ethiopia, Northern Kenya, Southern Somalia and Djibouti.

  • Millions of men, women and children are fleeing the drought, crossing borders and arriving malnourished and starved. Thousands of children were not able to survive the journey and have died.
  • Over 50% of livestock has perished, and failing rain seasons have caused rivers, streams and wells to dry and crops to disappear, leaving little left to feed the hungry.
  • The United Nations have declared famine in Somalia.
  • There is growing concern of the spread of diseases such as measles, meningitis and malaria.
  • This crisis could continue well into 2012.

The famine in East Africa is getting worse day by day, and is spreading.

  • Over 11 million people are affected – the worst drought in 60 years in the region
  • Families, women and children (often barefoot) are crossing scorched land, to the borders of Kenya and Ethiopia, they are looking for help in the refugee camps – not everyone survives the journey
  • Those who do, are faced with the sound of crying, disease and death around them in the camps,
  • One third of the children are malnourished – their skin is shrinking on their bodies, infants are crying all day, babies too weak to lift their hands
  • Would you be able to stand your OWN child being put through this? How long can you bear you baby crying, and you yourself can do nothing to help? Can you bear to watch your son or daughter slowly die in your hands?
  • In addition food prices have doubled and tripled in some areas, making it even more difficult for people to survive without YOUR help
  • Tens of thousands of deaths have already occurred
  • These people cannot do anything more to help themselves. It’s time for us ALL to act.
  • Allah Says in the Qur’an:
    • “The likeness of those who spend for Allah’s sake is as the likeness of a grain of corn, it grows seven ears every single ear has a hundred grains, and Allah multiplies (increases the reward of) for whom He wills, and Allah is sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knower).”  (Qur’an, 2:261)
    • “Those who (in charity) spend of their goods by night and by day, in secret and in public have their reward with their Rabb (only God and Sustainer).  On them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve.”   (Qur‘an, 2:274)
    • …that which you give for charity, seeking the Countenance of Allah, (will increase); it is those who will get a recompense multiplied.” (Qur’an, 30:39)
  • Rasulallah Salallahu ‘alaihi wasallam said: ‘Whoever gives charity equal to a date from good earnings – for Allah does not accept anything but that which is good – Allah will take it in His right hand and tend it for the one who gave it as any one of you tends his foal, until it becomes like a mountain.’ (Bukhari and Muslim)
  • Brothers and sisters, WE are being tested by this famine – not just the people in Somalia and Kenya and Ethiopia. WE ARE. Let’s be successful in this test.
  • It’s not too late to help – please help now, please help today
  • £1 can help feed a family for ONE day, £10 can feed a family for TEN days, £30 will feed a family for the MONTH OF RAMADAN,
  • Please give generously – think about your hunger this Ramadan, think about their hunger every day, which does not stop with an iftar
  • Jazakamullah khayrun

Bismillah-hir Rahman-nir Raheem (in the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

We are walking into Ramadan with the usual expectations: our routines to be disrupted and changed, food needs preparing, invite people to Iftari, get some Islamic books and ornaments, prepare your self for taraweeh. All good things and things that need doing. But don’t miss one crucial point about Ramadan – that we think about those less fortunate than us. There are crises all over the world and the most recent to catch the news is the drought in East Africa (Horn of Africa).

Imagine that over 10 million people are threatened with starvation. TEN MILLION!

It’s hard to imagine that number. So instead, think of a family member, someone dear to you. Think of them, their skin caving in on their body, creeping inwards every day, wrapping around their bones, making the dreaded outlines that we see in news pictures like the one below.

Starvation in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya, East Africa

Imagine their throats drying up, tongues lacking saliva, the strength being drained from their arms and legs, day by day. The lack of food and water sapping their will to live. It’s hard to concentrate because of the headaches, the aches and pain throughout their body. And on top of that, is the sound of those around you. Thousands of people around you. All in pain, all suffering, all facing the stress of not only themselves, but their loved ones… dying in their arms. They can’t do anything about this.

Allah Sends us these trials. Why? So that we can sit from the comfort of our plate-filled iftaris and put the images of these people aside, whilst we enjoy our meals an pretend to ourselves about how well we did to get through the fast that day?

Ramadan should spur us into action to being REAL MUSLIMS. And that means helping those less fortunate than ourselves, not simply remembering them nor watching them on TV. It is only a phone call to donate some money to help your brothers and sisters across the world. Your donation can save their lives.

Some Facts

  • It’s the worst drought in East Africa (Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Etritrea, Djibouti) for 60 years, affecting over 10 million people, threatening them with starvation
  • Six out of 10,000 children are dying every day – one child dying is too much
  • Somalia is the hardest-hit country but the country is already suffering from two decades of fighting
  • Familes are trekking, for days and weeks, through rough terrain, children barefoot, to try and escape the drought and reach refugee camps. Of the children that survive the journey, many are severely malnourished and could lose their lives
